Stormzy is back with a new song called “Mel Made Me Do It” a collaborated song with celebrated Jamaican dancehall singer Stylo G. The seven-minute song arrives with a nearly 11-minute video directed by the filmmaker KLVDR, which includes cameos from an eclectic cast of characters including track star Usain Bolt, documentarian Louis Theroux, and soccer manager José Mourinho.
Prior to Heavy Is the Head being released in 2019, Stormzy released four singles: “Vossi Bop,” “Crown,” “Wiley Flow,” and “Own It.” In 2020, he won a BRIT Award and released “Still Disappointed,” a diss track that continued his longstanding grime rivalry with MC Wiley.
Stormzy’s tracks usually fall into one of two categories: choral, rousing, and heartfelt, or puffed-up boasting, replete with Yacht-Masters, and MC mastery. However, Mel Made Me Do It – his first record in almost three years – achieves a difficult feat, balancing between these two styles without getting completely muddled.
Meanwhile, Roma coach Jose Mourinho also makes a remarkable appearance in the new video from the British rapper Stormzy. Halfway through the 10 minute production, Stormzy drops the line “I prefer not to speak like I’m Jose”, and follows it by actual audio from a real Jose Mourinho press conference: “I prefer really not to speak, if I speak, I am in trouble”.
Mourinho participated in the video with Stormzy and crew. Mou’s presence on the track is because it samples one of his famous post-match interviews, in which he expressed his displeasure with Chelsea’s performance in a match against Aston Villa.
“I prefer not to speak. If I speak, I am in big trouble. In big trouble. And I don’t want to be in big trouble.”
Mourinho therefore poses in the video with his finger on his lips.
😅 Nooooo way. Big Jose Mourinho in the cut!
