Jonás Cuarón (“Desierto”) is on board to direct Sony Pictures’ “El Muerto” starring Grammy Award-winner and mega recording artist Bad Bunny, also known as Benito A Martínez Ocasio, mccallkwadzo.com has exclusively learned.
According to reports, El Muerto is still in early development but will have Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer penning the script. The film will be the first live-action Marvel film with a Latino lead — an honor Bad Bunny is more than proud to have. “It’s amazing, it’s incredible,” he said during Cinemacon. “I love wrestling. I grew up watching wrestling, and I’m a wrestler. I’m a former champion, so this is why I love this character. I think it’s the perfect role to me, and it will be epic.”
“El Muerto” is the first Latino character to lead a Marvel film, and the antihero character is also known as Juan Carlos Estrada Sanchez, the son of a luchador who finds himself next in line to inherit the ancestral power of “El Muerto,” which is the powers and a mask worn by a super-powered wrestler.
The character appeared in a Spider-Man comic in which the luchador wrestler attended a charity event organized by J. Jonah Jameson in which he hoped that El Muerto would defeat Spider-Man and unmask him in the ring.
El Muerto was first Introduced in 2006’s Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #6, his real name is Juan-Carlos Sanchez and he’s a Mexican luchador who wears a magical mask and he’s destined to face off with the mystical wrestling god El Dorado. “The powers and mask of the super-powered wrestler el Muerto have been passed down from generation to generation.
Each wrestler had to prove themselves to their oppressor, el Dorado, so that they could remain alive and keep their powers. When Marcus Estrada presented his son Juan Carlos to el Dorado, Juan Carlos cowered in terror, unwilling to fight him. Marcus Estrada sacrificed his life to try and save Juan Carlos. Out of respect for his father’s courage, el Dorado granted Juan Carlos ten years to travel and to become brave, and then to duel a masked wrestler and unmask him.”
Bad Bunny previously teased the film saying: “It’s crazy. It’s something that I can’t believe it yet. I’m very happy about this character, about this opportunity to be the first Latin [lead].
It’s not about I’m gonna be the first Latino making a role, it’s gonna be about the first Latino main character, is the important thing. So it’s something huge, and it will be epic. I know that people are gonna be proud of my work.”
El Muerto will be Cuarón’s first film following 2021’s Z and Bad Bunny’s next film following his feature film debut in Brad Pitt’s Bullet Train.
El Muerto is one of a few Marvel films being developed at Sony. Some of the other film projects include Kraven the Hunter, starring Aaron Taylor Johnson, to be released in theaters on October 6, 2023, and Madame Web, starring Dakota Johnson, which will be released on February 16, 2024.
