It has never been simple to make a successful mystery movie for the big screen—not a thriller, crime drama, or something nebulously referred to as “suspense.”
For starters, the only reward occurs at the conclusion, when the murderer is apprehended and all the pieces come together to complete the puzzle. Instead of action, the emphasis is on quiet reflection and deduction, which isn’t particularly cinematic in today’s theater of limited attention spans.
Television works best for traditional mysteries when they are presented in a series of brief episodes (thanks, PBS Masterpiece Mystery!). However, there are some indications that mystery filmmaking in Hollywood may be entering a new Golden Age.
Beginning in June 2021, production on the follow-up to the acclaimed crime comedy “Knives Out – Mord ist Familiensache,” which stars Daniel Craig as a private investigator: Director Rian Johnson (47), who was at the time of the June 28 shooting, posted on Twitter, “First day of shooting for the next crime thriller about Benoit Blanc.”
He thanked the “nice, patient people here in Greece who allow us to do all this killing on their peaceful beaches”.
The filmmaker also posted a photo of a film camera in front of a coastal promenade.
Aaaaaaaand WE’RE OFF! Day one of filming on the next Benoit Blanc mystery. Thanks to all the lovely patient people here in Greece for letting us do all this murdering on their peaceful shores. pic.twitter.com/SUFptCpl3G

Knives Out was a box office success, so it makes sense that Netflix would spend an absurd amount of money making Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, which will be released this winter. Now the atmospheric trailer has also been released. It’s getting mysterious again! But see for yourself ABOVE.
What is Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery about?
In Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) returns to solve a mysterious murder that takes place at a luxurious private estate on a Greek island. But how and why he ends up on this island is already the first of many mysteries to be solved.
Blanc meets a motley group of friends around billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton), who accept his invitation to the annual meeting. As in the best crime novels, each character has their own secrets, lies and motives: Bron’s former business partner Andi Brand (Janelle Monáe), current Connecticut Governor Claire Debella (Kathryn Hahn), top scientist Lionel Toussaint (Leslie Odom Jr.), fashion designer and former model Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson) and her diligent assistant Peg (Jessica Henwick), and influencer Duke Cody (Dave Bautista) with his girlfriend Whiskey (Madelyn Cline)—each a suspect.
So once again the Who’s’Who from Hollywood meets to be scrutinized by Benoit Blanc…
A large number of unexpected cameos are included in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. However, during the movie’s world premiere at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival, director Rian Johnson pleaded with audience members to refrain from sharing any spoilers. Therefore, those cameos’ identities will be kept a secret.
On November 23, 2022, the film’s title and the mystery surrounding the murder will be revealed to viewers in theaters for a brief one-week run in 600+ locations nationwide before it is made available for streaming on Netflix on December 23, 2022.
