Charlie Cox‘s Matt Murdock will be missing two close friends and confidants in Daredevil: Born Again, with Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson not expected to return for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe series.
What’s known about the new show is that Vincent D’Onofrio will return as Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, after both actors had already popped up in the MCU. Matt Murdock had a surprise cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home while Kingpin appeared in Hawkeye, and word is both will also appear in the upcoming series Echo.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Karen Page and Foggy Nelson won’t be played by Woll and Henson in the upcoming Disney+ series in the respective roles they were in the Netflix series Daredevil. It’s unknown if their roles will be remade for Born Again or if they’ll be completely cut from the narrative. The report also reveals that Jon Bernthal is set to reprise his role as Frank Castle from The Punisher, a character who was first introduced in Daredevil, making him the third actor after Cox’s Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk/Kingpin to reprise their Netflix Marvel role in the MCU proper.
Elden Henson and Deborah Ann Woll, two performers, both had significant parts in the original Daredevil and appeared as guests in a number of Netflix’s other Marvel series. In five episodes of The Punisher, Woll in particular co-starred with Bernthal’s Frank Castle. While some fans will be disappointed by their absence from Daredevil: Born Again, Marvel Studios is probably hoping that viewers will become attached to the new characters in the series, who are portrayed by MCU newcomers like Michael Gandolfini, Margarita Levieva, Sandrine Holt, and Nikki M. James, among others.
Whether the Foggy and Karen characters would completely disappear from Daredevil: Born Again, which would explain why Henson and Woll wouldn’t be returning, or if the roles will be recast with new iterations of the two is unknown at this time.
Ahead of Daredevil: Born Again, Cox and D’Onofrio will reprise their respective roles in the Hawkeye spinoff Echo, which picks up with Alaqua Cox’s Maya Lopez after the events of the 2021 Disney+ limited series. While plot details remain under wraps for Echo, reports have indicated that Cox’s Daredevil and D’Onofrio’s Kingpin will have prominent roles. Daredevil’s storyline will reportedly involve him seeking out “a former ally” while Kingpin’s will see the antagonist running for mayor of New York City. Both storylines are expected to continue in Daredevil: Born Again.
According to D’Onofrio, who described the next series as “really cool” and extremely different from “the Netflix program, which as we know was amazing,” fans would be “very startled” by Born Again. He went on, “This is innovative and quite clever. With that, we’re going to shock everyone.”
Filming on Daredevil: Born Again‘s 18-episode first season began in February 2023 in New York City under the working title “Out the Kitchen” and the production company title “Blind Faith Productions, LLC.” Filming on the Marvel Studios production is expected to last until the year’s end in December.
